Submission Guidelines for Best Lesbian Erotica 2013

Kathleen Warnock is now accepting submissions for Best Lesbian Erotica 2013, to be published by Cleis Press in December, 2012.

Payment is $100 for each published story, and two copies of the book.

Submission Guidelines:

• Submit short stories, self-contained novel excerpts, other prose
• Unpublished material will be considered
• Previously published material will also be considered

• Submit two hard copies of each submission (you may print double-sided).

• Include a cover page with: Author’s Name, Pen Name (if applicable) Title of Submission(s), Address, Phone, and Email Address, and short (50 words) bio.

• All submissions must be typed and double-spaced; number the pages.

• Each submission should be a maximum of 5,000 words (list word count on title page). You may print double-sided.
• You may submit 2 pieces of work
• No email submissions will be accepted, except in the circumstances detailed below; you can email queries to Kwarnockble (at) gmail.com

• Manuscripts will not be returned.

• We will consider stories that have been published in other themed anthologies.

• You live outside of North America or Europe
• The cost of postage would be prohibitive from your home country

Submissions will be accepted throughout the year. The final (postmark) deadline is April 1, 2012. All submissions will be responded to by the end of September. Early submissions are encouraged.

You put something of yourself into everything you write. You know you do. Now it’s time to take a deep breath, go that extra step, and write an erotic story firmly grounded in truth. Real encounters, real emotions, real sensations, real people, drawn from memory and transformed by your art into real stories as gripping as any fiction.

Some degree of poetic license—or erotic license—is all right. Memories are inevitably filtered through time and experience, and telling a story can sometimes reveal the inner truth of feelings and actions better without a precise list of actions or a verbatim account of conversations. In the heat of the moment—and I do want the very hottest moments—certain parts stand out so vividly in your mind that everything before and after blurs and must be imagined. Combining events into a shorter time span can make the overall effect more intense. Pseudonyms are fine, and even if you use your own name, you must use fictional names for any other characters in order to maintain some degree of privacy.

As always, I’ll be looking for variety in style, tone, setting, characterization, and all the things that make a story distinctive. This time, though, realism is the primary factor. First-time encounters are great, high points in long-term relationships are lovely, one-time outrageous adventures are fine, and BDSM elements are welcome as long as you really know what you’re talking about. True love, mad crush, daring experimentation, any of these can work, and even sex that doesn’t work out as planned is fair territory. Perfection in looks, skills, endurance, or any other erotic attribute is not necessary, and even if you’re lucky enough to have encountered perfection, you’ll have to make me believe in it. In fact, no matter what you write, you’ll have to make me believe in it. These stories must be not only intensely arousing, but intensely convincing as well. Readers need to feel a link to their own lives and a validation of their deepest desires. 

All stories must be written in the first person. All writers must be women, which in this case means having identified as women during any stage of their lives. My preferred length is 2000-5000 words. If you have a good story to tell but aren’t sure your skills are up to it yet, give it a try; I’m willing to work with you on technical details. This balance of truth and art can get complicated, so feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

• The feisty track star getting hot and sweaty in the locker room with her teammates…

• The beautiful Japanese student exploring women’s culture in the states…

• And more—your imagination’s the limit! I want them all, so long as they’re hot stories my readers will want to read one-handed in the bathtub, bring ‘em on!

Use your imagination and your very best words to craft hot stories with great ideas, real characters and interesting situations while leaving your reader hot, wet and wanting more. Put your all into it, but as you’re bringing on you’re your best sleaze, remember that story reigns supreme—humor and twist endings are fun, but the stories must also be hot and sexy. Bring on your very best and realize that typos, punctuation, grammar, odd/incorrect POVs, and other things DO count against you.

Guidelines:

1) Stories should be between 2,000 and 7,000 words in length.

2) Please submit a typed, double-spaced hard copy in at least 12-point type with one-inch margins. Preferably in a nice, readable serif font like Times New Roman. Documents should be formatted with US standards of 8½”x11” paper, etc.

3) Characterization, plot, and story are key. (Really. I want a good, hot story, with a believable plot and real characters!) but punctuation, grammar and POV are important.

4) Stories must be erotic, lesbian and on topic.

5) Name, address, phone number, word count, and email address should all appear on the first page. (If accepted, final manuscript must be submitted electronically.)

6) Include a 50-word bio with your submission.

7) Only previously unpublished stories—or stories that have appeared on the Internet (and can be pulled)—will be considered. (Please include information on where and when the story was posted in your cover letter.)

8) Please include a brief cover letter with your submission.

9) Only three submissions per person please.

10) Include an SASE with sufficient postage to return the manuscript if you would like it returned, or, if manuscript is disposable, please state so in your cover letter.

11) Handy hint: If you don’t necessarily need/want the manuscript back, but would like to know if you’ve been rejected, please include a #10 SASE (that is, Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) so we can let you know if we’re unable to use your story with a simple form letter (no feedback can be given).
