THEM IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR ISSUE I UNTIL JULY 15TH

THEM is a literary journal of trans* writers. As such only authors that identify within the trans* umbrella will be considered. 

THEM accepts poetry, short fiction, experimental writing, and pretty much anything in any genre. Basically, if you’re trans* and making things, submit. For each issue of THEM we also are looking for cover art. There are really no guidelines for this. Surprise us.

Upon publication, THEM retains one-time online and archival rights. Authors and artists retain all copyrights to their work.

Simultaneous submissions are fine, just let us know if you get accepted elsewhere.

Label submission email as follows: ARTIST NAME; GENRE (short story, poetry, cover art, etc). In the body of the email include your publication name, preferred contact information, all work attached within one document (docx preferred, but we’ll work with you), and a brief bio if you’d like. Be advised: we really don’t care about your publication history.

THEM will try to respond to you within about three months but we make no promises. Sometimes THEM is busy.

Please make sure to read and follow these guidelines in order for your work to be considered. Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel is looking for short short stories of 1,200 words or less focused on the theme of BDSM from a submissive perspective. While the word count is short, I want complex stories with a beginning, middle and end, not simply scene snippets. I will consider stories from a dominant’s perspective if that is the best way to illuminate the mindset of the submissive. The final book of 69 stories will contain an extremely wide variety of characters, POVs (I welcome first, second and third person stories), settings, scenarios, motivations, experience levels, motivations, BDSM practices (which can be combined with other sexual acts), fetishes, couplings, relationships, etc. All genders and sexual orientations welcome. All characters must be over 18; no nonconsensual activity, scat, incest or bestiality. No poetry. Original, unpublished stories only. Best Bondage Erotica 2014 will collect the best bondage erotica stories around, focusing on a range of techniques, implements, characters and scenarios, from newbies to seasoned bondage players and everything in between. Orgasm…let me count the ways! Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel is looking for short short stories of 1,200 words or less focused on the theme of orgasm. The more creative, varied and hot, the better. While these are extremely short stories, I still expect character development, exciting plots, and as many types of orgasms as possible. Surprise me! (For an excellent example of an offbeat orgasm story, see “Chemistry” by Velvet Moore in my anthology Orgasmic.) You put something of yourself into everything you write. You know you do. Now it’s time to take a deep breath, go that extra step, and write an erotic story firmly grounded in truth. Real encounters, real emotions, real sensations, real people, drawn from memory and transformed by your art into real stories as gripping as any fiction.

Some degree of poetic license—or erotic license—is all right. Memories are inevitably filtered through time and experience, and telling a story can sometimes reveal the inner truth of feelings and actions better without a precise list of actions or a verbatim account of conversations. In the heat of the moment—and I do want the very hottest moments—certain parts stand out so vividly in your mind that everything before and after blurs and must be imagined. Combining events into a shorter time span can make the overall effect more intense. Pseudonyms are fine, and even if you use your own name, you must use fictional names for any other characters in order to maintain some degree of privacy.

As always, I’ll be looking for variety in style, tone, setting, characterization, and all the things that make a story distinctive. This time, though, realism is the primary factor. First-time encounters are great, high points in long-term relationships are lovely, one-time outrageous adventures are fine, and BDSM elements are welcome as long as you really know what you’re talking about. True love, mad crush, daring experimentation, any of these can work, and even sex that doesn’t work out as planned is fair territory. Perfection in looks, skills, endurance, or any other erotic attribute is not necessary, and even if you’re lucky enough to have encountered perfection, you’ll have to make me believe in it. In fact, no matter what you write, you’ll have to make me believe in it. These stories must be not only intensely arousing, but intensely convincing as well. Readers need to feel a link to their own lives and a validation of their deepest desires. 

All stories must be written in the first person. All writers must be women, which in this case means having identified as women during any stage of their lives. My preferred length is 2000-5000 words. If you have a good story to tell but aren’t sure your skills are up to it yet, give it a try; I’m willing to work with you on technical details. This balance of truth and art can get complicated, so feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Leatherwomen 2012 – Still Kicking: Deadline – January 31, 2012

Is leather dead? Hell no! But it has changed and so have leatherwomen. Celebrate the thrill of skins and kink and the hot women who embody the name leatherwoman in this new universe of kinky potential. Like the previous Leatherwomen anthologies, stories may contain characters of any physical, emotional and sexual identity you believe falls under the name leatherwoman. BDSM, latex, punk, heterosexual, queer, single, couples, poly, orgies – if you believe your story and your characters belong in this crew, then convince me. Extra points for non white/American/party-going/lifestyle characters and situations, and much love for pushing the boundaries of identity and politics. Make it romantic or ironic; sweet or scary. But fill it with power and presence and desire.

Hot Butches/Hot Femmes: Deadline – December 31, 2011

Two companion volumes, one goal – to celebrate the classic identities of butches and femmes, those who love to play with gender! Your story must feature at least one butch or femme (depending on the volume) matching the title description. They can be the point of view character, the protagonist or the lust object of the story. Don’t dial back the sex – keep it hot and spicy! But these are celebratory books, so I am looking for happy endings. Kink/leather/BDSM themes welcome, but not required – the flavor here is gender and gender expression.
No Safewords – A Marketplace Collection: Deadline – February 28, 2012

Do you have what it takes to enter The Marketplace? For the first time since The Academy, I am opening the doors to my exclusive playroom, for this first collection of fan fiction! Yes, you can write a Marketplace story – and this is your chance to really push the limits! Use any character, any setting.
